Slow or Interrupted Hugging Face Large Model Downloads: How Enterprises Can Pull Models Reliably?
Explains the respective impacts of model authorisation, platform rate limits, internal shared copies, and cross-border network transmission; for large file interruptions caused by cross-border public internet congestion, our cross-border transmission channel improves sustained download speeds and separates downloads from online inference traffic.
When enterprises run large model fine-tuning, inference testing, or GPU compute services, they frequently need to download large model weights and datasets from overseas open-source platforms such as Hugging Face. When download speeds crawl or transfers repeatedly drop and fail halfway through, GPU servers and R&D engineers are left waiting.
Slow or interrupted large model downloads stem from more than one cause: sometimes it is congestion and packet loss on the cross-border public internet, while other times it involves platform account permissions, rate limits, or the download method itself. Once you distinguish these common causes and responsibilities, we can streamline the cross-border transmission channel so large models and datasets download reliably to your local environment.
Why model downloads fail or crawl: common causes across layers
When R&D engineers report that they "cannot pull models from Hugging Face," they may actually be running into several distinct issues:
- Cross-border public internet congestion and dropped connections: Individual model weight files are often very large. When pulling them across borders over the public internet, congestion and packet loss at international gateways not only push sustained download speeds down, but also trigger connection resets mid-transfer that cause large files to fail repeatedly.
- Unapproved account access for gated models: Many popular open-source models on the platform require users to accept licence terms on the model page, pass approval, and include a valid access token when downloading. An unauthorised error (such as HTTP 401 or 403) means account permissions have not been set up; R&D staff must complete the request and token configuration on the platform side, as changing network paths cannot bypass authorisation requirements.
- Platform rate limiting triggered by simultaneous pulls from multiple servers: If many machines in a data centre send high-frequency requests simultaneously without authentication or from the same egress IP, they can trigger the platform's abuse protection (returning HTTP 429 Too Many Requests). Platform quota limits cannot be overcome simply by adding network bandwidth; teams need to authenticate with account tokens and reduce duplicate concurrent pulls across machines.
Settings your R&D and data centre teams can check internally
To get the best results from a cross-border download channel, your R&D or data centre administrators can also check three internal settings (these are not mandatory prerequisites before a consultation and can be reviewed together during onboarding):
1. Use official download tools that support resumable transfers: Downloading large model repositories directly via a browser or basic single-threaded commands risks losing all progress if a connection drops. The official Hugging Face guide recommends using its hf CLI tool or huggingface_hub library (newer versions include faster built-in hf_xet transfer support) so already downloaded chunks are reused if a transfer pauses or restarts.
2. Verify free disk space and cache directory locations on servers: Download tools typically write large temporary files to the system's default cache directory before verification. Ensuring the target disk has ample free space and smooth write performance avoids mistaking a full disk for a network interruption.
3. Share a single downloaded internal copy across multiple machines: When multiple training or inference servers in a data centre need the same model, we recommend having one machine download the model from overseas to shared internal storage or a self-hosted internal mirror and artifact repository so other servers read it over the LAN instead of pulling duplicate files from overseas. Internal shared storage and file management are arranged by the enterprise itself—we do not provide caching software or file management products, and our service focuses on accelerating the cross-border transmission leg that pulls models from overseas platforms back to your data centre in China.
How we accelerate cross-border large model downloads and our performance in compute projects
For slow downloads and frequent interruptions caused by cross-border public internet congestion, we provide a dedicated cross-border transmission channel for your R&D lab or compute data centre:
- Keep existing R&D download tools with hassle-free onboarding and scaling: Your data centre or lab can connect directly to our cross-border channel over existing public internet broadband without waiting for construction of traditional physical dedicated lines, and scale up bandwidth on demand when pulling large batches of models; engineers keep their existing download commands, account tokens, and file verification workflows unchanged.
- Separate high-volume downloads from online workloads: If your data centre also runs customer-facing online AI inference APIs or remote development sessions alongside model downloads, we prioritise and separate bulk model downloads from latency-sensitive interactive traffic so pulling new models does not slow down live services.
Basic information to prepare for your initial consultation
- The city where your R&D servers or compute data centre are located and your current approximate network bandwidth.
- Which overseas platforms you mainly download models or datasets from daily (such as Hugging Face or GitHub), and whether your biggest challenge is slow speeds or frequent mid-transfer interruptions.
- Whether the data centre also runs online AI inference or customer-facing services; you do not need to prepare multi-day speed test spreadsheets upfront, as specific technical details can be confirmed with us step by step during the consultation.
